Annual Lake Tahoe Trip
An August Tradition on Lake Tahoe’s North Shore
Boats, Long Lunches & Lake Days That Never Get Old
Some trips are about discovery. Others are about returning to a place that feels like home. For us, Lake Tahoe’s North Shore on the California side is exactly that—a tradition we come back to every August, year after year, to slow down, soak up the sun, and live lake life exactly as it should be.
Lake Days, Always
Our Tahoe routine is simple and perfect: boating, floating, swimming, and doing absolutely nothing on purpose. Days revolve around the water—early mornings on the lake, afternoons drifting with a drink in hand, and golden-hour boat rides that remind you why Tahoe is so special.
August is peak Tahoe magic. The water is warm (for Tahoe that is), the days are long, and the pace of life feels just right.
Where We Eat (Every Single Year)
No Tahoe trip would be complete without our favorite spots—places that feel just as essential as the lake itself.
Bridgetender Tavern is a must for lunch, happy hour, and cocktails. Ask a local where to post up on an August afternoon and Bridgetender’s outdoor bar is the answer. Cold drinks, shade from the pines, live music, and zero pressure to leave anytime soon. It’s the kind of spot where one round turns into the whole afternoon—and honestly, that’s the plan.
Breakfast always means Fire Sign Café, home of my husband’s favorite buckwheat pancakes. Cozy, classic, and consistently good, it’s the perfect way to start a lake day—especially when paired with strong coffee and a relaxed morning pace.
For drinks with a view, Gar Woods Grill & Pier is non-negotiable. Bloody Marys, Wet Woodys, and the iconic deck overlooking the water make it a Tahoe institution—and one we happily return to every summer. And before you even think about skipping appetizers—don’t. The lobster deviled eggs at Gar Woods are unreal. Rich, perfectly seasoned, and topped with generous chunks of lobster, they somehow manage to feel both indulgent and classic at the same time. It’s the kind of dish you order “just to try” and then immediately wish you’d ordered two of.
And of course, one of our favorite traditions is boating up to Sunnyside Restaurant for lunch. There’s something undeniably Tahoe about tying up the boat, stepping onto the dock, and settling in for a lakeside meal with the water just steps away.
A Worth-It Detour: South Lake Tahoe & Dinner at WOLF
One of the best spontaneous decisions of our Tahoe trip? Hopping in the car and taking the scenic drive to South Lake Tahoe for dinner at WOLF by Vanderpump. The lake views alone make the drive worth it, but let’s be honest—I was there for one very specific reason: the goat cheese balls.
Yes, those goat cheese balls. Crispy on the outside, warm and creamy on the inside, and absolutely living up to their Bravo-famous reputation. If you’ve watched even five minutes of Lisa Vanderpump television, ordering them is basically required—and they did not disappoint.
Beyond the iconic appetizer, WOLF delivers serious upscale lodge vibes with cozy interiors, moody lighting, and a menu that feels indulgent without being overdone. It’s the perfect stop if you’re looking to elevate a Tahoe evening with a little glam, great cocktails, and a meal that feels like an experience.
Pro tip: Make a reservation, especially on weekends. South Lake gets busy, and WOLF is no secret anymore.
If your Tahoe itinerary has even a little flexibility, I highly recommend carving out time for this drive. Think mountain scenery, lake air, and a dinner you’ll be talking about long after the trip ends.
Why We Keep Coming Back
Lake Tahoe has a way of grounding you. It’s relaxed without being boring, familiar without ever feeling stale. Each August trip feels like a reset—filled with sunburned shoulders, late dinners, slow mornings, and the kind of memories that build quietly over time.
It’s not about doing everything. It’s about doing what matters—together, on the water, year after year.
And that’s why we’ll always come back.
What We Pack for Lake Tahoe (Boating & Lake Day Essentials)
After years of August trips to Tahoe, we’ve learned that packing well makes all the difference. These are the boating and lake day essentials we never skip:
Swimwear (more than one) – Because something is always drying on the boat
Light layers – Tahoe mornings and evenings cool off fast
Sun protection – Hats, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are non-negotiable
Water shoes or flip flops – Easy on, easy off for docks and boat days
Beach towels – Quick-dry if possible
Cooler bag – Stocked with water, snacks, and lake-day drinks
Floating loungers or inflatables – For peak relaxation while floating
Waterproof phone case – Trust me on this one
Sunscreen lip balm & after-sun lotion – Small but essential
Casual lake-chic outfits – Easy pieces for dock lunches and happy hour
Tahoe is all about effortless comfort, and having these essentials ready means more time on the water—and less time running back to the house.
